Amelia

1507년, "서반구, 북아메리카와 남아메리카"는 지도 제작자 마틴 발트제뮬러의 "Cosmographiae Introductio," 에서 현대 라틴어 Americanus 로부터 전통적으로 Amerigo 베스푸치 (1454-1512)에 의해 만들어진 것으로 알려져 있다. 베스푸치는 항해사로서 새로운 대륙을 발견했다고 주장하며 두 차례의 세계 여행을 했다. 그의 출판물은 이것이 새로운 대륙이라는 생각을 제시했으며, 그는 이를 Novus Mundus "신세계"라고 처음으로 부르기도 했다. FREDONIA, FREDONIAN, FREDE, FREDISH, &c. &c. These extraordinary words, which have been deservedly ridiculed here as well as in England, were proposed sometime ago, and countenanced by two or three individuals, as names for the territory and people of the United States. The general term American is now commonly understood (at least in all places where the English language is spoken,) to mean an inhabitant of the United States; and is so employed, except where unusual precision of language is required. 19세기에 흔한 구어 발음인 "아메리케이"는 적어도 1643년까지 거슬러 올라가며, 한 시에 away 와 운운하는 시가 있다. 1969년부터는 "U.S. 사회가 인종주의, 파시즘, 억압 등으로 인식되는 것"이라는 뜻의 Amerika 가 확인되었다. 이 철자는 독일어이지만 KKK 를 연상시킬 수도 있다.
