in various theological doctrines making knowledge dependent on faith, 1885, from Latin fides "faith" (from PIE root *bheidh- "to trust, confide, persuade") + -ism. Blount's "Glossographia" (1656) has fidicide "Faith-destroyer; a breaker of word or trust."
