1835 in anatomy, in reference to the substance of a part or organ, especially fibrous connective tissue, plural stromae, Modern Latin, from a special use of Latin stroma "bed covering," from Greek strōma "coverlet, covering, mattress; anything spread out for lying or sitting on" (from PIE root *stere- "to spread").
