Toledo
city in Spain, famous from 16c. for its sword-blades of fine temper; the place name is Latin Toletum, said to be from a Celtic name, from tol "hill."
The Toletan or Toledan Tables (Middle English Tables tolletanes, late 14c., from Latin Toletanus) were sets of mathematical calculations of dates of risings, etc., of the planets, devised for Toledo by Arabic astronomers there, translated into Latin before 1200, later modified under Alfonso X (Alfonsine Tables).
