"speaking truth," 1650s, from Latin veridicus "truth-telling, truthful," from verum "truth," neuter of verus "true" (from PIE root *were-o- "true, trustworthy") + dic-, stem of dicere "to speak" (from PIE root *deik- "to show," also "pronounce solemnly").
